History Of Cub Foods

Quoting from their website "Cub Foods was founded in 1968, by brothers Jack and Charles Hooley. These two also founded the already existing Hooleys Supermarkets. The Hooley brothers established what would soon to be known as Cub with Robert Thueson, a brother-in-law.

“Cub,” the company’s name, actually stands for “Consumers United for Buying.” One of the company’s achievements is its being the first whole discount food store in the US. In 1980, Cub was sold to giant grocery chain SuperValu. After the change in ownership, the number of Cub stores rose to 83 contributing to the company’s expansion in the retail grocery area.

In the 1990s, Cub put up some of its branches in the areas of Nashville, Tennessee and Atlanta, Georgia. In 1995, Cub went into a merger with another grocery chain in Dayton,Ohio. In 1995 however, the company sold all if its shares. Despite not having their share in the supermarkets, the company still remains operating under the “Cub Foods” banner. During March of 1997, employees and stores under the company were owned by Kroger. In 1999, another grocery chain, WinCo Foods, had been operating five of the Cub stores. In 2003, Cub sold almost all of its stores in the area of Colorado to grocery giant Kroger.

From the year that it was founded up until now, Cub Foods stores have slowly evolved and is being credited for a number of innovations. Among the many innovations in the stores, include a checkout conveyor system. Over the years, Cub Food gained a reputation of being a “no-frills” supermarket, as shoppers would sack their own purchases and generally serve themselves when buying groceries at any of its supermarkets.

The stores’ different slogans include, “The Low-price Leader,” “Save More, Get More,” “The Store Next Door” and “Bring more to your table.” These slogans were created for the purpose of attracting customers to check out and buy items from the stores."
